Maps and Charts 2024

As a pictorial idea this new series Maps and Charts, is based on island formations, sourced from the coastal areas of Australia and the archipelago of Finland.

Islands are exposed sections of submerged and connecting landforms. In a metaphorical reading of the paintings these islands imply a symbolic rendering of human co-habitation.

The island shapes represent individual identities, symbolic in shape, size and variation; they pull away and towards one another. Some are grouped as a ‘family’. The element of water is reduced to an ambiguous spatial zone; the opposing and binding element of co-existence.

Maps are used to guide and organise: we chart a course using a map, with the regular structure of a map grid and symbols. Restricted access zones are indicated, longitude and latitude marked, and important shapes highlighted. These map indicators are deliberately random and illogical, attempts at civilising the human condition.
